A week ago I returned from my quickie-trip to New Orleans where I attended The New Orleans Witches Ball with a friend of mine from my High School days. Click on that link there to check out The Ball and all of the pictures--I'm tellin' ya-- this is the most exquisite and sumptuous event I have ever attended. I felt so special `` I now understand the term 'honored guest'. All of my expectations and more were met at this amazing event! Big Kudos to Cairelle and her helpers!
The trip itself went off without a hitch; thank goodness since I literally worked since last March to fund it! But all was well, the city was in a bit of disarray due to street construction and public transit more rightly resembled Mr Toad's Wild Ride as a result of that but it was all do-able...
Some highlights--
* Shrimp and Grits for our first lunch upon arriving at Cafe Amelie in the Quarter - we both considered licking the bowl it was soooo good!
* City Park, Magazine St., and a super charged 20+ city block power walk back to the house on Saturday to get ready for the Ball--in 24 minutes flat!
* Meeting friends in the city (Kalen, Mr and Ms. G, Anna from Erzulie's
* Second Line from Louis Armstrong Park through The Treme
But more than these events --fantastic as they are-- is my feeling of 'home' as soon as I enter the city's general radius. I feel my shoulders drop and loosen up, my breathing evens out and is deeper. I feel completely apart of it. Its a delightful feeling...And the textures, the sounds, the colors--and yes; even the dubious 'smells' of the Quarter-- inspire me and make my fingers itch to create and to paint...
I soak it all up and store it for when I return to Charlevoix the colors have fled before the coming Winter and the sun makes only a rare appearance. I need the vibrancy of the environment and the whispers of the Spirits from New Orleans like others need vitamins-- these trips sustain me until the sun returns to Northern Michigan once again.
