Its been a few weeks since I've written anything here-- partly because there was SO many "maybe-s" but nothing definite and partly because I had been in an awful funk for want of sunshine and greenery. While I am still wanting desperately to feel sun on my bare arms and see colorful flowers and leafy trees I do now have some definite news to chat about, so here I am!
About 6 weeks ago my husband and I were chatting about summer plans and potential jobs. I mentioned that a food cart or ice cream truck would be a blast and sufficiently seasonal to allow me to close it during the slow season. We reminisced about restaurant work and having had the small eatery at the beach several years ago--what worked, what didn't--what we would do differently. The light bulb went on and we decided to see if that building was available again--and of course if it would be affordable. The City confirmed that it was indeed available and that they were currently taking bids for it. We quickly gathered a basic menu plan, filled out the information and sent it all in.
And waited.....and waited....and waited.... Two days ago we received word that we won the bid--not only for the building on the beach that we wanted but for a small concession stand at the city ballpark as well! Wow! Both places for my original (pretty darn low) bid!
Now the REAL planning begins-- I have a basic menu worked out for the Beach House but I'm working now on adding a few unique signature lunches that will bring people down from 'in town' to eat with us. In pure mad scientist fashion I developed my own (amazing if I do say so!) Bacon Jam recipe that incorporates (among other things) dried Michigan sweet cherries. Its fantastic and will be the feature of an amazing burger plate.
I'm also looking at perfecting a Whitefish Fritter and a Gumbo that uses smoked lake fish in place of crab... The ball park concession won't feature a full menu at all-- basic candies, popcorn, etc....
Its going to be crazy-fun and I'm really looking forward to it all! But of course, summer is craziness x100 here so there are several other situations that will require a ton of time and work along with running the Beach and the Ball field...
I have both of my kids graduating this year-- my son from High School and my daughter from College. While I'm terribly proud the planning of a double graduation open house is going to be An EVENT. Thank goodness my husband loves to help out with this stuff!
Then there's the house in East Jordan--it MUST be sold before Oct of this year. That means negotiating the leaving of our ne'er do well renters, cleaning out the jam-packed garage and doing any necessary repairs and painting--all of that BEFORE we can even list it. *facepalm*
Its become vitally important for me to emotionally get back to basics with all of these things looming-- One Day At A Time. I have a terribly bad habit of 'over planning' and worrying a situation to death which really doesn't solve any issues that I'm concerned about but does add a boat-load of anxiety. This makes me---and anyone around me-- miserable. So my goal in the midst of this extremely busy time is to Let It Be. Take each item or event as it comes and not micro-manage the hell out of every day and person in it. *Fingers Crossed*

wowsers thats one hell of a busy time you got coming up but bloody brilliant news on the eatery... now you call it an eatery... im not sure what we would call it here in not so sunny UK... so take some pics!! how exciting for you all im really pleased. cant wait to see everything develop
Suzi-- I think I've settled on 'cafe'. Technically the city refers to it as 'concession stand' but I want a full menu so that doesn't really fit either lol
