Have you wondered where I've been? At the beach! And doesn't that sound grand- though its not exactly been 'a day at the beach' ... Looks like our brutal cold of this past winter is hanging on into this so-called summer with temps so far rarely reaching over 75 degrees. And Lake Michigan? A 'balmy' 50 degrees so far- up from the truly numbing 42 of a few weeks ago! This is not boding well for my beach-side concessions and bistros (I have 3 on 2 different lakes here in Charlevoix) and I'm watching more money leave than come in- its making me a wee bit cranky!
Such is the nature of the beast when living and working in a seasonal resort town.. its exhilarating, frustrating, dull and at the same time riveting. It gets into your blood and most of us are doomed to working in a 'gig' mindset than a 'career' environment. In fact, the thought of a traditional 9-5 office job makes my blood run cold.. though the concept of a steady pay check is intriguing.
My last entry -- waayyy back in March -- discussed garden and yard plans and, believe it or not! I've actually been able to get a start on some of those! I was lucky enough to acquire some antique bricks from a friend and used them to put in a decorative walk-way. I've lined it - so far- with some tiger lilies with hostas next on my list (waiting for the Fall garden center sales lol!).Jack and I also dug up and moved two neglected lilac bushes from the side front and placed them as a screen in the back yard to eventually hide a drainage culvert that runs along the side of the yard (ugly but necessary). I enjoy the planning and designing and so appreciate the longer vision and patience that yard work and gardening requires; it quiets my brain and quells my tendency to over-plan and obsess....
