Mackinac Island,Michigan , that picture right there <--------- is one of my favorite places on earth. Ever. It is a place out of time where motorized vehicles are banned and the Victorian buildings are kept beautifully restored and painted in ice cream colored hues of green, lilacs and pinks. In fact, this is the location of the cult classic starring Christopher Reeve , Somewhere In Time.
Every year I try to get to the island a few times but this past summer I realized that I had not made it at all--not even once. So I did something so totally out of character that it turned the whole trip into a fantastical adventure. I went alone. Just me and my camera. And I did not bring children, my husband, or friends. Nor did I ask if anyone minded--I simply drove up to Mackinaw City bought myself a ferry ticket and zipped across the Straights of Mackinac. Alone. And it was fantabulous! Click here to see m

My trip to Mackinac occurred in September-- a month that will mostly pretend to be Summer but brushes your cheeks with cool winds to remind you that Autumn approaches. September is subtle and mannerly.
And if September is a Lady then October is a bawdy show girl with a bad temper.
October is the most stunningly beautiful month here in Northern Michigan; the colors and the crisp air will literally take your breath away! When She's feeling sassy she shows off her colors in the maples and oaks against the most surreal blue sky imaginable. When She's feeling angry Her skies turn dark and she throws here colorful foliage down to the ground in a soggy fit of pique and her breezes turn to bitterly cold gales.... October is petulant. October is also the time of our last festival here in Charlevoix-- Apple Fest. This beautiful event showcases the farms and orchards of the area and brings together farmers, crafters, cheese makers, and home brewers to scatter like leaves across the East Park of the downtown area--rain or shine... And I go. Every year. Rain or shine! Because I love it and you just can't find this anywhere else. For more Autumn pictures of Northern Michigan click here
And now its all over-- Halloween approaches for a last hoorah and then we hunker down for a long winter's rest. And I get antsy...
And dream of New Orleans.
